What is Thermography?

Thermography is an adjunctive modality; it isn’t able to tell you what is wrong but it indicates the area to look at. It is very useful in lameness and poor performance evaluations. Thermography can also be used for early disease detection, pain evaluation and treatment monitoring.

We use a thermal imaging Technique called “core heat extraction” developed by Rob Holder of Earth Eco Equine Services in South Africa.  We have extensively tested this method in lameness clinics alongside tradition diagnostic methods. It has proved to be very effective at indicating pathology.  We are the only provider of this method in the UK. This method is unique as it not only provides a thermogram, we can superimpose the image onto a digital photo, therefore giving an exact anatomical point.

EPT follows very strict protocols to ensure the results are as accurate as possible and can detect skeletal and soft tissue pathology.

A full body scan takes approximately 1 ½ hours to scan the horse at the owner’s premises or at an arranged clinic. The data is then taken away and analysed. Videos of the horse moving are also summitted to our vet partner Kate Granshaw.

Full reports and a vet summary are usually completed within three working days. Reports should be interpreted in light of the current clinical presentation, with the input of the client’s usual veterinary surgeon.
